The geography of colour

Concept and methodology

The concept geography of colour has given birth to a wide range of applications, particularly in marketing of consumer products. Lenclos’s research demonstrated a new approach – based on the context of population, location and time – similar to a human science. This methodology has opened up many new perspectives and today it’s known and applied across the world.

Colours of Europe

From 1965 Lenclos used his methodology to research the distinct colours used in the housing of regions across France. This work then developed into studies extending across Europe. These studies were the subject of two books, Colours of France and Colours of Europe.

Colours of the world

Between 1995 and 1999 Lenclos continued his studies into the indigenous colours of habitats across the whole world. From the United States to Guatemala and Algeria, extending all the way to Russia and India, he discovered an impressive diversity of expression in the colour of housing, villages, cities and landscape.
